چکیده

High-resolution mesoscale and microscale simulations of wave breaking and laminated structures induced by mountain waves in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) are presented for two Intensive Observational Periods (IOPs) of the Terrain-induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX). To resolve multi-scale nonlinear processes in the UTLS, vertical nesting and refined vertical gridding have been developed and applied within a microscale model that was coupled to the mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. In these simulations, the finest nest of WRF is coupled with embedded microscale nests, within which the fully three-dimensional, nonhydrostatic, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a stretched, refined grid in the vertical and improved resolution in the UTLS region. For nesting, both lateral and vertical boundary conditions are treated via relaxation zones where the velocity and temperature fields are relaxed to those obtained from the mesoscale WRF inner nest. Realcase simulations of two T-REX IOPs are based on initial and boundary conditions from high resolution T799 L91 ECMWF analysis data. Within the embedded microscale nests, localized sharp shear layers and stiff gradients of vertical velocity and potential temperature are predicted above the tropopause and in the lower stratosphere. Potential temperature and velocity fields resulting from fully resolved three-dimensional instability mechanisms and multi-scale dynamics in UTLS show favorable agreement with in situ balloon and aircraft observations obtained during T-REX.

Observations of Atmospheric Structure and Dynamics in the Owens Valley of California with a Ground-Based, Eye-Safe, Scanning Aerosol Lidar*

First results are presented from the deployment of the NCAR Raman-Shifted Eye-Safe Aerosol Lidar (REAL) in the Owens Valley of California during the Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) in March and April 2006. REAL operated in range–height indicator (RHI) and plan position indicator (PPI) scanning modes to observe the vertical and horizontal structures of the aerosol and cloud distribution...

Trapped mountain waves during a light aircraft accident

On 31 July 2007 a fatal light aircraft crash occurred near Clonbinane, Victoria, Australia and the official investigation concluded that mountain wave turbulence was the likely cause. This study uses three-dimensional numerical modelling and linear wave theory to examine the dynamics of mountain waves during this turbulence event and their role in generating turbulence. Analysis of the observed...

Three Dimensional Analysis of Laminated Cylindrical Panels with Piezoelectric Layers

A semi-analytical solution is presented for three dimensional elastic analysis of finitelylong, simply supported, orthotropic, laminated cylindrical panels with piezoelectric layers subjected to outer pressure and electrostatic excitation. Both the direct and inverse piezoelectric effects are investigated. The solution is obtained through reducing the highly coupled partial differential equatio...

Delamination Analysis in Composite Root of a Carbon-Layer Reinforced Wind Turbine Blade

The inconsistencies accompanied with material properties tipically cause the rise of delamination risk in composites made of different types of glass and crabon fibers. In this study, the delamination of a composite beam reinforced with a carbon layer under bending load is investigated. To this end, a small piece of a wind turbine blade root in the form of a heterogeneous laminated plate is sim...
